The Boxer

Alternative dance rock band Bloc Party's Kele Okereke (Kelechukwu Rowland Okereke, if you want the full name) released his first solo album, titled The Boxer, produced by XXXChange, on 21 June (Wichita / Polydor). In an interview with CHARTattack, Okereke explained the album title, saying "as a boxer, you have to rely on nobody else but yourself to achieve what it is you want to achieve. Even though you take hits, you have to keep focus on your priorities and keep going. I thought that was an inspiring image." The impressive first single from the album, "Tenderoni", was released on 14 June 2010, with 'Everything You Wanted' set to be the new single. He has recently released details on a tour, check his website for more info. http://www.iamkele.com/
The album has so far received generally favourable reviews from critics, with pleasing reviews from the likes of NME giving the album a 7/10, with clashing reviews from Drowned In Sound dropping the album down to a 5/10. As much as half of the album sounds like Bloc Party with electronic music in it, i think its important to look at The Boxer as something totally fresh, which is what it is. A refreshing, thick album.
